Places to visit near “Alcomet”
The
town of Shumen is 6 km from the plant. It is a historical place where there
is a museum, disposing of a rare and rich collection, a medieval fortress,
authentic architectural monuments dating from the period of the Ottoman domination
and the Bulgarian Revival. One can visit the unique “Museum of the Horse”,
which is situated in the village of Kabiyuk, the modern document “Founders
of the Bulgarian State”, the “Tumbul Mosque" and many other historical places.
Rock monasteries - situated above the level of the villages of Osmar and Troitsa,
which are 8 km from Shumen. These rock monasteries offer an excellent opportunity
to enjoy a mountain trip and rock-climbing, together with a visit of the churches
and the monks’ cells carved in the rocks, which were inhabited in XII – XIV
centuries.
The
Madara plateau, which is 12 km from the town of Shumen, is an ancient cult
and religious place of an incredible atmosphere, with rich nature – wonderful
rock forms and various flora and fauna species. There, an adroit Old-Bulgarian
craftsman has carved in the sheer cliff an impressive relief by order of
the ruler. This famous monument is called “The Madara Horseman” and is
under the protection of UNESCO. It represents a triumphant horseman and
symbolizes the power of the Bulgarian sovereign and his army.
Pliska,
the first capital of Danube Bulgaria is situated at a distance of 20km
east from Shumen. It was founded by the founder of the Bulgarian State,
khan Asparuh (year of birth not known – 701), who pitched his camp there
in 681 and later turned it into a city. Nowadays the ancient capital is
an archeological reserve where some of the most impressive monuments of
the Old-Bulgarian architecture have been discovered and exhibited.

Veliki Preslav is 20 km from Shumen and became capital of Bulgaria under the son of tsar Boris I, tsar Simeon The Great (893 – 927). Under his reign Bulgaria reached its greatest prosperity and its capital Veliki Preslav was the biggest town in Eastern Europe, the Near and the Far East. It was a center of commerce, literature, art, crafts, etc. In the town nowadays there is a big church, an enormous castle, an archeological reserve and a museum.

The national historical and archeological reserve and the “Veliki Preslav” Museum are created on the ruins of the Old Bulgarian capital Veliki Preslav and take about 500ha of its area. A lot of monuments have been discovered on the territory of the reserve so far, and the exhibition of the museum comprises numerous authentic works of Old Bulgarian and Mid-Byzantine art.

Among
them there are masterpieces like the Golden Church, the icon of St. Theodore,
the gold treasure of Preslav, the ceramic iconostasis of the Palace Monastery,
a collection of lead stamps, which is the biggest all over the world, as
well as a collection of epigraphic monuments – an unquestionable proof
of the big achievements and the high level of educational activity of the
Preslav Literary School.
